Discover Country Sports - Hunter Field Target Shooting

A Hunter Field Target Competitor takes his aimThe United Kingdom Association for Hunter Field Target (UKAHFT) was established in 2003 by a small group of airgun enthusiasts wanting an alternative and less formal airgun shooting discipline than traditional Field Target (FT) competition.

The idea behind HFT was to create an airgun competition format where standard hunting rifles and scopes could be used in competition, thus avoiding the need to buy expensive equipment. Limiting the adjustments that could be made to the equipment during a competition means field craft i.e. range finding and technique, became more important that sophisticated airguns and expensive optics.

What is Hunter Field Target?

Hunter Field Target (HFT) is an airgun shooting discipline that consists of shooting 30 metal targets set out in hunting type scenarios. These targets may be in the open, up trees, partially obscured, in pipes etc. The list of target locations is endless and determined by the imagination of the course setter. Each shooter takes one shot at each target from a peg, which will be the designated point to shoot that target. Airguns must not exceed the legal limit of 12ft/lbs muzzle energy, but can be of any calibre.

How do you score points?

A standard airgun field target is placed in each lane, which have a “kill zone” varying in size from 15mm up to 45mm. If the “kill zone” is struck by an airgun pellet it will cause the target to fall down and 2 points are scored. If the target is hit anywhere else on the silhouette face plate the target does not fall but still scores 1 point If a target is missed target completely a zero is scored. Targets are placed around the course at distances from the shooting peg varying from 8 yards to 45 yards.
