Meet the Small Munsterlander (Imp)
The Small Munsterlander is an all round hunting, pointing and retrieving gundog, originating from the Munster area of Germany. Often thought to be related to the Large Munsterlander, the two gundogs are not as close a relative as their name suggests, coming from the same area of Germany whilst actually produced from a completely different breeding stock.
The hunting abilities of the Small Munsterlander (SM) are very versatile, being able to hunt effectively on both land and in water. Resembling both the spaniel and the setter, the SM gundog traditionally worked with noble families' falconers for bird and small game hunting, before the use of guns were deployed. Back then the SM worked in an upland area helping to flush prey for the falconer.
Intelligent and attentive, today's SM is very strong willed, using his natural athleticism and strong drive to follow his sense of smell and thrive when out performing his hunting role. With his strong bond with his master, the SM gundog works hard whilst listening for both voice and hand signals at intervals when on hold or pointing.
Whilst the SM is popular in certain parts of Germany, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, here in the UK and over in the US the breed are estimated to reach within the low thousands. Recognised by the Kennel Club as an imported breed in 2006, the breed is yet to be fully established within the hunting community.
