Meet the spaniel; a versatile gundog that is smaller and much more compact than many of the other breeds within the gundog category.

Whilst traditionally bred to flush out game from their covers, the spaniel has developed into a type of gundog that can quickly mark and retrieve shot game whilst returning its quarry undamaged and with a soft mouth to its owner – also a recognised characteristic of the retriever.

Unlike many of the other dogs within this category, the spaniel boasts various hunting skills and is able to point, set and retrieve. The spaniel is widely considered to be the best 'all-round' gundog, although it can be difficult to train an individual dog to a high standard in all facets of gundog work.
