Originating from Hungary, the Wirehaired Vizsla (pronounced Veesh-la) is a rare breed of gundog that was developed in the 1930s by two gentlemen named Vasas Jozsef and Gresznarik Lazslo. Their intentions were to create a powerful working gundog with a heavy coat and a substantial frame, more suited to the rugged outdoor conditions and icy cold waters.

A result of cross-breeding the Hungarian Shorthaired Vizsla and the German Wirehaired Pointer, the Wirehaired Vizlsa is a medium-sized gundog, whose gentle and sensitive character coupled with his affectionate nature has placed him as a favoured breed amongst handlers. Whilst lively out at work, he remains a gentleman above many other gundogs and often surpasses himself when working the land.

As with many other gundogs, the Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla is a versatile breed and displays excellent confidence at hunting, pointing and retrieving. A natural gundog, the Vizsla requires minimal training and will pick up commands quickly; over harsh commands with this breed are unnecessary and strong correction may be quite damaging if trained too harshly.

Thriving on their interaction with people, the Vizsla forms close bonds with their owners and are exceptional around children and in the family environment. However, it is in open spaces and being outdoors where they can truly shine. 

Noble and graceful in appearance, the Wirehaired Vizsla has a broad head, neck and chest and possesses a strong powerful jaw; a feature that allows him to effectively retrieve heavier game. His short coarse coat is often longer around the muzzle and head and his striking russet gold colouring allows him to stand out on the field. A true hunting dog, the Hungarian Wirehaired  Vizsla is an athletic breed whose great stamina places him right at home in the open country.
