Discover Gundogs: Introducing the Brittany Gundog
Primarily bred for bird hunting, the Brittany gundog is one of the smaller of the hunter-pointer-retriever breeds and whilst being a relatively hardy breed, he is often quite 'spaniel-like' in the face. However, whilst spaniels, such as Springers and Cockers, are used for flushing game, Brittanys are more akin to pointing and being an all-purpose sporting dog.
Developed in the 19th century, the Brittany can often be seen in paintings and tapestries depicting the hunt, often showing off his distinctive orange and white coat. Athletic, compact and energetic, the breed was originally employed for rough shooting, with today's Brittany more often found in field trials, falconry, in the show ring and as a family pet. Other characteristics of the Brittany gundog are his long legs, short tail and solid built frame.
Entering the UK for the first-time back in 1982, there are now some 1600 registered in the UK with around 16-17 litters bred each year. With the urge to hunt still fixed firmly into his temperament, the Brittany has long been the companion of choice when taking to the open field. Along with his character, stamina, speed and great courage, the Brittany remains a force to be reckoned with, sporting a superb great scenting ability they enables them to rarely miss their prey.
