Countryman Fairs has a long and proud tradition of offering high quality terrier and lurcher events. The Midland Game Fair is home to the world’s premier event for earth and running dogs, The Countryman’s Weekly Champion of Champions.
Following the successful launch of the Terrier and Lurcher Village at the Midland Game Fair 2009, we intend to build on the success of the improvements. This year the Midland Game Fair will once again offer terrier and lurcher competitors ringside parking closer to the showing and field events, in addition to the toilet and catering facilities that made the event comfortable for competitors and visitors alike.
Countryman Fairs Chief Executive Ian Harford was incredibly pleased with the feedback; “Along with Gunmakers Row, Airgun Expo and The Working Dog Village, the Terrier and Lurcher events have long been one of the cornerstones on which the Midland Game Fair has been built. As the event has grown and developed, we have encountered a few issues with providing the appropriate standard of facilities for competitors, including ringside parking, while still ensuring visitors can enjoy being part of the Terrier & Lurcher events. The feedback following the improvements we made to the new Terrier & Lurcher Village in 2009 has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are excited to be working on even more improvements for the 2010 event. We are very proud to be able to host the Countryman’s Weekly Champion of Champions, and feel we can now provide facilities befitting the world’s premier Terrier & Lurcher event.”
Following feedback from competitors, the Terrier and Lurcher showing rings and field events will once again be located next to a dedicated car park. The straight racing course and the simulated coursing will be within a stone’s throw of the car park and the entry tent.

The Lurcher is not an actual breed of dog. Rather, it is a type of dog, which usually has a member of the sighthound family for one of its parents. Sighthound breeds include the Greyhound, Whippet, Deerhound, Borzoi and Sluki. Other breeds commonly found within the family tree of a Lurcher include Border Collies and Bedlington Terriers.

The Terrier breeds were developed for hunting vermin of all shapes and sizes, and therefore priority was originally given to there working abilities rather than to appearance. They are an extremely tough and hardy group of dogs, and generally small in size to enable them to work underground. The term “terrier” derives from “terra”, the latin word for earth.
